Ann Powell - Tennis Wales President

My life in sport can be divided roughly into 2 parts.

I played hockey from the time I was 11 years old, either for school, college or local teams, wherever I lived. In later years I became treasurer and Chair person of Risca Hockey club and also secretary of Gwent Hockey Association, representing Gwent on S. Wales Committee.

I retired at the age of 50 and joined Allt-Yr-Yn Tennis Club where I have been a member for over 20 years and became the first woman Chairperson of the club.  I have played for every team (except the men’s) within the club and hold the posts of secretary, welfare officer, main contact, ballot administrator as well as being responsible for fixtures, court allocation and balls. I am also Chairperson of the Cymru Kitchens Mid week League in Gwent and help to run league.

I am a member of the South Wales Management Committee, Places to Play and League Committees, where I help to formulate leagues and settle disputes. This past year I was honoured to be asked to take on the presidency of Tennis Wales and have thoroughly enjoyed flying the flag for Wales at several events, supported by my long-suffering husband.  I was delighted to be re-elected for a second year.

Although heavily immersed in tennis, it does not take up my whole life, (much to the surprise of some); we have 3 grown-up children, 4 grandchildren ranging from 14 to 3 years of age. They keep me very busy on a daily basis, but I wouldn’t be without them!
