Johanna Konta prepares to serve in the Fed Cup Zone Group 1

The Aegon GB Fed Cup team will face Romania on outdoor clay courts in their crucial World Group II play-off next month.

Anne Keothavong and her team will travel to the Tenis Club IDU in the Black Sea city of Constanta for the tie on April 22-23.

Britain are bidding to return to the Fed Cup’s select World Group of countries for the first time in 24 years.

Keothavong’s team won all four of their ties at the Euro/Africa Zone Group I event in Estonia in February, earning a shot at April’s World Group II play-offs after defeating Croatia in a decisive final match.

Romania are likely to present Britain with a tough challenge, particularly if world No.4 Simona Halep is available for selection.

The hosts, however, will be desperate to break a three-tie losing streak, having dropped out of the elite World Group in 2016 and losing to Belgium in the first round of this year’s World Group II action.

Britain last competed at World Group-level in 1993, when they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Spain in the first round.

However, after the brilliant performances of Johanna Konta, Heather Watson, Laura Robson, and Jocelyn Rae in Estonia, there is real hope Britain can get the job done in Romania next month.
