Andy Murray’s inspiring French Open campaign ended in a four set defeat to Novak Djokovic as the World No.1 completed his career Grand Slam.

With the 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 victory on Philippe Chatrier, Djokovic became only the eighth man to ever win all four Grand Slam titles.

Andy MurrayMurray was bidding to become the first British man to win the singles at Roland Garros since Fred Perry in 1935 and started with one of the best sets he has ever played.

Continuing on from his 11 match winning streak on clay and a stunning win over defending champion Stan Wawrinka, the British No.1 had the Serbian rattled in the opener.

After being broken to 0 in the very first game, he went on a four game run playing some of the most near perfect tennis you are ever likely to see.

Murray, contesting his first final in Paris, was seriously pumped and raced into a 4-1 lead demonstrating his full repertoire of genius.

After a gutsy hold for 5-2, the 2015 Davis Cup champion served it out confidently and was looking to extend his Andy Murrayrecord of winning all 26 matches at the French Open when he has clinched the first set.

But Djokovic was having none of it and after losing in three previous finals to complete his career set, he came out for the second a different animal.

An early break for 2-0 was backed up by a huge hold for 3-1 and he never looked back as a whirlwind of angles and heavy shots peppered off his racket to level proceedings.

Two further breaks in the third and fourth were enough to put him on the brink of victory but in trademark fashion Murray came fighting back.

One break of serve was retrieved and with Djokovic evidently nervous, Murray scented a chance to get back on level terms but a netted backhand after just over three hours sealed his opponents’ place in the tennis greats.

Andy MurrayDjokovic has now won 12 Grand Slam titles and currently holds all four at the same time for the first time since Rod Laver.

For Murray, who up until 13 months ago hadn’t won a title on the surface, this has been an incredible season on the red stuff with the winner’s trophy from Rome and finals in Madrid and Paris.

He said after: “It was a fantastic atmosphere and it was a pleasure to play in front of a crowd like that.

“This is Novak’s day today, what he has achieved in the last 12 months is phenomenal. Winning four in one year is an amazing achievement.

“Everyone who was here is very lucky to see it and I am proud to have been part of today.”
