The only clay court Grand Slam gets underway next week with an in-formAndy Murray aiming to win his first French Open – and Rafael Nadal his tenth.

We take a look at the British players who have travelled over the Channel to compete at Roland Garros.

Who are the men?

Andy Murray

 

 

Murray heads to Paris on a 10 match winning streak having won his first two titles on the surface in Munich and Madrid.

In the Spanish capital the British No.1, who reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros in 2011 and 2014, beat the all-conquering Nadal in his own backyard.

 

 

 

Joining Murray in the main draw is Aljaz Bedene. The new British No.2 names clay as his favourite surface and warmed up for the event on the clay court challenger circuit in Italy.

In Rome, Bedene beat Czech Adam Pavlasek 7-5, 6-2 in the final to lift his second ATP Challenger Title of the year.

James Ward, Kyle Edmund, Liam Broady and Brydan Klein were all in qualifying action with Edmund making it through after winning three matches

Who are the women?

Heather Watson

After having to qualify in 2014, Heather Watson is back in the main draw this year as the sole British representative to automatically take her place in Round 1.

Watson has reached Round 2 on three occasions and will be looking to reproduce the form which saw her beat former world No.11 Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-1 on the clay in Rome.

Johanna Konta and Naomi Broady entered qualifying with British No.2 Konta joining Watson in the main draw after coming through three matches. .

2014 flashback:

Seeded No.7, Andy Murray reached the semi-finals which was his best Grand Slam result of the season. He ran into a man on a mission in Nadal who stormed to the final with a straight sets victory.

Heather Watson successfully qualified for the event and made it to the second round before coming up against eventual finalist Simona Halep.

James Ward also qualified and took a set off clay court specialist Tommy Robredo in the first round before losing in four sets.  

Jamie Murray, Dom Inglot, Ken Skupski, Neal Skupski, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins contested the men’s doubles with no one progressing beyond the third round.

Dom, Colin and Jamie were also present in the mixed doubles draw.

 

Jordanne Whiley and Yui Kamiji won the women’s wheelchair doubles with a tight 7–6(3), 3–6, [10-8] win over Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot.
