The British contingent of Kyle Edmund, James Ward, Brydan Klein and Liam Broady enjoyed strong starts to their qualifying bids at the French Open.

Ward kicked off proceedings by beating Irishman James McGee 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 on the Roland Garros clay.

The British No.3 successfully qualified in 2014 after winning three matches and is looking to repeat the feat this year and join Andy Murray and Aljaz Bedene in the main draw.

Kyle Edmund then had a tough task against in-form Austrian Gerald Melzer, brother of former world No.8 Jurgen.

Melzer was fresh from reaching the semi-finals of the BMW Open in Munich where he defeated Dominic Thiem but Edmund recovered from dropping the first set to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Brydan Klein

At the same time, Brydan Klein was locked in a tight battle with Frenchman Mathias Bourgue.

Klein, back in the world’s top 200, lost the first set 6-3 before fighting back to win the next two 6-2, 9-7.

Liam Broady had to wait to get his match with Radu Albot underway after a rain delay and when it finally started, play was suspended with Broady 5-4 up. Play will resume tomorrow morning.

Up next in Round 2:

Klein v Facundo Arguello (No.139, Argentina)

Edmund v Victor Hanescu (No.187, Romania)

Ward v Christian Lindell (No.200, Sweden)
