The British No.1 and previous US Open champion came through 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.
Murray plays Brazilian 30th seed Thomaz Bellucci in the third round on Saturday.
Meanwhile British No.2 Aljaz Bedene lost 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 to American Donald Young, while in the women's draw, Briton Johanna Konta stunned ninth seed Garbine Muguruza prevailing 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-2.
