Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot put Britain in the driving seat going in their Davis Cup World Group play-off against Uzbekistan after triumphing in Saturday’s thrilling doubles rubber.

The Brits fought back after dropping the first set to take the match away from their Uzbek opponents Denis Istomin and Sanjar Fayziev, wrapping up a 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 54 minutes.

The countries were one apiece in terms of victories going into Saturday’s doubles action after wins for Britain’s Dan Evans and Uzbekistan’s Jurabek Karimov in Friday’s marathon singles matches.

It looked from the early exchanges that Britain might be going into Sunday’s action needing a pair of victories from the remaining matches after Uzbekistan took the lead in a closely-fought first set.

Istomin and Fayziev looked to keep the momentum going in the second set as the Brits struggled to fashion a break, but the home advantage eventually told in a tense tiebreaker with Murray and Inglot levelling the scores.

From there the match swung in the Brits’ favour as they refused to offer up a single break point to the Uzbeks in the third and fourth sets, stepping up their level to race to a victory as the match edged towards its fourth hour.

Britain will now open Sunday’s singles rubbers 2-1 up as they bid to seal a seeding for next year’s revamped Davis Cup competition. Cam Norrie takes on Istomin in the opening match before Evans faces the youngster Karimov in a potential decider.
