Johanna Konta in Estonia

Johanna Konta has been shortlisted for a Fed Cup Heart Award following her recent performance for Britain.

The award recognises players who have displayed outstanding determination and courage on court during their respective Fed Cup ties in February.

The British No.1 travelled to Tallinn, Estonia, with her Fed Cup teammates for the Europe/Africa Zone Group I tie and played an integral part in helping Anne Keothavong’s team reach the World Group II play-offs for a second consecutive year.

Konta’s 2018 Fed Cup journey kickstarted with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Portugal’s Maria Joao Koehler in the round-robin phase of the tie. She then faced a tough test in the form of local favourite Anett Kontaveit, but showcased her resilience to fight back from a set down to seal a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2 victory.

She maintained her strong form going into Saturday’s play-offs against Hungary where she faced Fanni Stollar and cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win. The result rounded off a perfect winning sweep for Britain and meant they were seeded fourth for April’s World Group II play-offs behind Russia, Spain and Ukraine.

Konta’s Fed Cup nomination falls under the Europe/Africa I category, with Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko and Serbia’s Olga Danilovic also in contention.

The team will be back in action from April 21-22, where they will travel to Japan’s Miki City for the opportunity to return to the elite World Group for the first time since 1993.
