Top seed Lukas Lacko from Slovak Republic lived up to his billing to take the Glasgow Trophy title with a three-set win over Italy’s Luca Vanni. He fought back from a set down to claim a 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory at Scotstoun Leisure Centre and lift his 12th ATP Challenger title.
Lacko, who has been ranked as high as No.44 in the world and is currently ranked No.104 in the ATP world rankings, had been in imperious form throughout the week and reached the final without dropping a set. However, unseeded Vanni did not let the Slovak have it all his own way in the final, taking the first set and pushing the No.1 all the way.
Following the match Lacko said: “It definitely was not easy, Luca beat me two years ago, both of us like this kind of fast surface where the balls bounce low, so I knew it was not going to be easy and in the end it was just two points and I took my chances and in the end it was a close match.”
Overall, Vanni was happy with his performance in Glasgow and the valuable ranking points earned will help his climb back up the rankings.
“For me it’s been an amazing week because it is my first ATP Challenger final since 2016 when I was near top 100 and I think I am going the right way to go back up to the top 250. My goal is get into Wimbledon qualies so I think I am going in the right direction.”
Earlier on in the doubles, Jonny O'Mara and Scott Clayton missed out on the title as they fell 6-1, 7-5 to in-form Spaniards Gerard Granollers and Guillermo Olaso.
Despite the loss, the British duo still entertained the sold-out crowd at Scotstoun Leisure Centre by nearly forcing a championship tiebreak. Following the final O’Mara said: "We tried our best, fought hard in the second set, but it just didn’t quite happen for us today which is a shame but that’s how it goes. At the end of the day it was a good week so we just have to take the positives from it.”
Jersey’s Scott Clayton added: “It’s been a great week for us, we made the final it was brilliant to play out there, the crowd was great and although we went down it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.”
The Spanish champions, who have been friends for many years, were happy to have won their first ATP Challenger doubles title together. Olaso said: “We’ve known each other for twenty years so winning a tournament together is something special.”
