The first day of main draw action at the Glasgow Trophy ATP Challenger brought mixed fortunes for the Brits on court with wild card Lloyd Glasspool progressing, but qualifier Dan Evans coming up short.
Glasspool put in an impressive performance to score an important win and take out seventh seed Marek Jaloviec 6-3, 6-2.
“I haven't won too many matches this year but I’ve started to play pretty well. I started off a little slow, a little shaky but as the match went on I started to feel more comfortable and got it going and started serving better and went from there.”
The home advantage of familiar courts and a supportive crowd helped the Brit score an emphatic win over his Czech opponent ranked over one hundred places higher in the world rankings:
“If you’re English you’re brought up on these indoor hard courts so most of us can play pretty good on this stuff, I like it, helps my serve out and suits my game.
Having the support of the home crowd makes this event so much more fun to play, for sure when you’ve got the crowd on your side it helps a lot.”
Next up for Glasspool will be Spain’s Guillermo Olaso who defeated Russia’s Evgeny Karlovskiy 7-6(5), 6-3.
Dan Evans' comeback came to an end at the hands of No.8 seed Lucas Miedler from Austria 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Despite a strong start by the Brit, the lack of recent match play eventually took its toll in third set but Evans was still taking plenty of positives from his time in Glasgow:
“I'm not really disappointed, it was a good match, he's better than his ranking I’m sure of that and it was a good level match. I got a bit tired at the start of the third set and that was it really, lost my serve, just a bit rusty at the start of the third set. But that’s a really good game I’ve just played, I played probably the best in that match than all the matches I’ve played this week, starting to feel the ball way better so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing again soon.”
