Former Wimbledon Champion Lleyton Hewitt and Paul Jubb, recent NCAA singles champion are among the wild cards announced today for the Surbiton Trophy ATP Challenger event taking place from 3-9 June.
Hewitt has been awarded a doubles wild card, along with fellow Australian Jordan Thompson. Despite retiring from full time tennis after the 2016 Australian Open the current Australian Davis Cup captain has kept a close eye on his Davis Cup players by playing doubles with a number of them.
Nineteen-year-old Jubb has recently made headlines by becoming the first British winner of the prestigious US college NCAA singles title, following in the footsteps of Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. The talented teenager from Hull has just completed the third year of his scholarship at the University of South Carolina.
Who is Paul Jubb?
A former U16 champion of the Junior National Tennis Championships, Jubb chose the route of a scholarship to one of the highly acclaimed American colleges. While the Yorkshire teenager has rarely featured on the world tour, he already has a professional Futures title to his name, won in Lithuania last summer.
Singles wild cards for the ATP Challenger event have also been awarded to British players Liam Broady, Evan Hoyt, Jan Choinski and Lloyd Glasspool. Qualifying wild cards go to Ryan Peniston and Brydan Klein.
Wild cards for the women’s ITF World Tennis Tour event running alongside the ATP Challenger event in Surbiton will be announced later in the week.
As well as the main events there will be a range of activities taking place on site throughout the week. Around 1600 school children will get the chance to experience live tennis and try out their skills and all ticket holders will be able to try out padel tennis for free. Families will be competing in the finals of the Quorn Family Cup and junior talent will be competing in the 16 & Under County Cup.
