Parents in tennis: How to support your child

How to support your child in tennis

Parent Support Programme

Parents play a pivotal role in sport and young people depend heavily on their involvement, support and encouragement.

The LTA have worked closely with Sport Psychology experts from Loughborough University to offer the following support to parents nurturing the next generation of players with the aim of supporting our mission to get more people playing tennis more often.

Start Competing Parents Guide

This guide is packed with information on finding the right competition and preparing your child for tournaments. It's a perfect starting point for parents who have just begun entering their child into competitions.

Optimal Competition Parenting Workshops

This informative workshop is run across the country and is an interactive 2 hour session designed to provide parents with the knowledge and skills needed to optimally support their child at tennis competitions.

The workshop is aimed at parents with children between the ages of 9 and 14 years who have either just started competing or who play regularly in competitions. The content has been designed in partnership with Loughborough University to address the specific needs of parents.

Topics covered include parents’ roles during tennis competitions, communicating effectively with children before, during and after a match and managing the emotional demands of competition.

95% of parents that attended a workshop in 2017 said they either ‘Agreed’ or ‘Strongly Agreed’ that the workshop improved their overall skills as a tennis parent and over 99% of parents were ‘Satisfied’ or ‘Very Satisfied’ overall with the pre-workshop booklet and workshop. Here is what parents have said about the workshop;

“This was an excellent session. I totally loved all of it. What an amazing course which I recommend to all tennis parents…’

“This was an excellent workshop brilliantly delivered by the tutor. The format (combination of slides and interactive group and discussions) worked very well. An excellent initiative….”

The cost of attending a workshop is £10. All workshops are run on a non-profit basis and this minimal charge covers the cost of running a workshop to ensure the long term sustainability of the programme.

Safeguarding information for parents

We strive to ensure that all children are safeguarded from abuse and have an enjoyable tennis experience.

We have provided some safeguarding FAQs for parents which we could recommend reading and you can also find out more through our main safeguarding pages.

If you have questions about safeguarding at your venue, or need to report a concern, speak to the venue Welfare Officer (or safeguarding lead). The LTA Safeguarding Team can also be contacted on 020 8487 700 or at safeandinclusive@lta.org.uk.

Parent Advisory Group

In 2016 we set up the British Tennis Parent Advisory Group (PAG) comprising representatives from across Great Britain with a range of experiences of tennis.

The group is helping us shape tennis as a sport of choice for children; helping us attract new families to tennis; and to better inform and support parents. For more information on this group, email competitionsupport@LTA.org.uk.
