Level 2 - Tennis Coaching Assistant

The level 2 coaching assistant course trains people to: 

  • Deliver beginner level coaching in a group setting in all types of venue
  • Plan and deliver structured lessons using LTA coach resources
  • Organise and facilitate competition for groups of beginners

The LTA strongly recommends that a Level 2 work under the umbrella programme of a minimum of a Level 3 Accredited or Accredited+ coach, whereby the Level 3 Coach  provides regular guidance and support. Duration and course structure

  • 5 days.
  • 4 hours coaching experience between day 2 and 3.
  • 4 hours coaching experience between day 4 and 5.

Module one – Days 1 & 2

  • Warm ups.
  • Organisations/communication.
  • Technical and tactical.
  • Lesson structure.
  • Teaching progressions.

Mentored experience 

Minimum four hours experience working with an LTA Accredited+ coach during the 4-6 week break.

Work on Level 2 portfolio.

Module two - Days 3 & 4 

  • Core coaching skills.
  • Schools.
  • Competitions.
  • Working with disabilities.

Mentored experience 

Minimum four hours experience working with an LTA Accredited+ coach during the 4-6 week break.

Completion of level 2 portfolio.

Module 3 – Day 5

  • Practical & portfolio assessment.

Course assessment

  • On court practical coaching assessment using course materials.
  • Online portfolio of evidence.
  • Candidates must attend all the sessions on the course at the same venue and pass all elements of assessment to be successful.

Course pre-requisites

  • Hold the level 1 coaching assistant qualification OR the LTA tennis assistants OR hold a 1st4sport level 2 certificate in coaching another sport with UKCC endorsement OR hold a teaching qualification specialising in P.E. Please contact enquiries@1st4sportqualifications.com with evidence of your Level 2 from another sport or PE teaching qualification, and forward their approval to the provider of the course you wish to attend.
  • Be LTA Accredited  or hold a DBS/PVG Enhanced Check with Child Barred List certificate (Volunteer certificates cannot be accepted) applied for through LTA/Tennis Scotland. The certificate must be less than 12 months old from the start date of the course.  Please note that it may take at least eight weeks for a DBS to be processed and you must hold a valid LTA DBS certificate upon booking. 
  • Hold a valid certificate of competence in either First Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), or will have successfully completed the OFQUAL Level 3 in First Aid.
  • Candidates are required to have their mentored coaching experience organised before the course starts. For help with this please contact your course provider.

Exemptions

You are eligible to bypass the Level 2 qualification if you meet ALL of the criteria set out below:

  • If you have or have previously had an ATP or WTA singles or doubles world ranking; OR if you have previously had an ITF wheelchair singles or doubles world ranking in the top 10 in the last 5 years; and
  • If you have a written recommendation from your Level 1 tutor that you have the skills (in their opinion) to bypass the Level 2 course; and
  • Internal approval from either the LTA coaching department (for non-disabled coaches only) or the Disability Performance Team (for coaches with a disability only).
