Andy Murray is through to his 17th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final after overcoming the hard-hitting Jeremy Chardy in four sets.

At times, home favourite Chardy was throwing the kitchen sink at the British No.1 but Murray continued his unbeaten run on the surface in 2015 with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Spaniard David Ferrer awaits in the last eight at Roland Garros after clinically dispatching Marin Cilic in straight-sets.

Andy MurrayMurray broke his French opponent in the very first game out on Suzanne Lenglen and despite dropping his serve straight after took the first set 6-4.

An inspired Chardy came through an epic opening game in the second set and moved into a 3-1 lead with some heavy shots hitting the lines.

After levelling the match 6-3, he threatened to cause an upset when he found himself a break up in the third but Murray responded to take control once more.

Two breaks down the line and the world No.3 had wrapped up the third set and three further breaks in the fourth saw him over the line and into his fifth quarter-final at the tournament.

Murray said: “He kept going for some big shots, he kept hitting the backhand very well today, and made it very difficult for me. But I was solid in the third and fourth sets.

“I felt like I had a good game. I know that I'm going to have to play very well against David Ferrer as he is a very good player.”

Fun fact

Olly Murs was No.1 in the singles charts with Please Don’t Let Me Go the last time Andy Murray failed to reach the quarter-final of a Grand Slam in which he entered.

Not including the 2013 French Open which he missed through injury, Murray last lost before the quarter-final stage at the 2010 US Open when he went down to Stan Wawrinka in Round 3.
