Heather Watson has been announced as one of the first four winners of the 2017 Heart Award following her flawless Fed Cup by BNP Paribas performances in February.
The award, which recognises players who have shone with courage on court and demonstrated outstanding commitment to their respective teams, was open for all Fed Cup fans to vote on from March 24.
Heather receives the accolade off the back of the Aegon GB Fed Cup Team’s trip to Tallinn where she sealed victories in all three of her Europe/Africa Zone Group I ties in the round-robin stages against Portugal, Latvia and Turkey.
The British No.2 went on to notch up a further two victories in the play-off against Croatia, triumphing in both the singles rubber and deciding doubles with Johanna Konta.
Heather was nominated alongside Serbia’s Ivana Jorovic within the Europe/Africa I category and joins Aryna Sabalenka (BLR), Galina Voskoboeva (KAZ) and Bianca Andreescu (CAN) as the final four award-winners.
She will receive a cheque to donate to her chosen charity and will be formally presented with the award in the upcoming crucial World Group II play-offs against Romania on April 22-23.
The British team will travel overseas once more to the Black Sea city of Constanta to fight for their place in the World Group II. A victory would allow the team to return to the Fed Cup’s elite World Group of 16 nations for the first time since 1993.
