Heather Watson has been nominated for a Fed Cup Heart Award following her sensational Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 performance for Britain in February.
The British No.2 was instrumental in helping Anne Keothavong’s Aegon GB Fed Cup Team through their zonal group tie to set up a World Group II Play-Off against Romania in April.
Heather has played an integral role in Britain’s recent Fed Cup outings, racking up 20 appearances and an impressive 20-7 win-loss record.
Her latest performance in the Estonian capital of Tallinn was flawless, sealing victories in all three of her Europe/Africa Zone Group I ties in the round-robin stages against Portugal, Latvia and Turkey.
After Britain earned a play-off spot against Croatia, the 2016 Wimbledon mixed doubles champion set the team off to a flying start with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over World No.88 Donna Vekic.
Heather’s last call was to the doubles court with Britain’s No.1, Johanna Konta. After dropping the first set, the pair put on a gutsy display to take the match and deciding rubber 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The result rounded off a remarkable week for Heather, who achieved a 5-0 record and kept Great Britain’s Fed Cup dreams alive as they look to return to the World Group II for the first time in 24 years.
The team will return to action next month where they will face Romania on outdoor clay for the crucial World Group II play-off.
Heather’s Fed Cup Heart nomination falls under the Europe/Africa I category which also includes Serbia’s Ivana Jorovic.
