Safeguarding in tennis for coaches

National Coaching Week

Coaches have a shared responsibility with everyone else involved in tennis to promote the welfare of all children, young people and adults at risk.

We should all ensure those who are at risk are safeguarded from abuse and enjoy their tennis experience.

Please see below further information on the new safeguarding standards at LTA Registered Venues, support and guidance, and how to report a concern.

Safeguarding Standards for Coaches working in LTA Registered Venues

From 1 October 2019 it will become mandatory for venues applying to register with the LTA to ensure all Level 3-5 coaches operating at their venue are LTA Accredited.

Coaches play a key role in keeping those involved in tennis safe and are often the front line of delivery. The implementation of standards for coaches is therefore a crucial next step following introducing venue standards in 2018.

In holding LTA Accredited status it means coaches will have completed the appropriate safeguarding and first aid training and undergone DBS checks. Coaches working in Scotland are required to be a member of the PVG scheme. This will provide greater clarity to parents and players when selecting a coach. Players that choose an LTA registered venue will know that the activity delivered by a Level 3-5 coach is conducted by an individual who is trained in safeguarding, has the appropriate qualifications and is insured.

We are starting with Level 3-5 coaches this year and it is our intention to apply safeguarding standards to all levels of coaches at registered venues to ensure best practice across the entire coaching workforce.

Support and Guidance

The LTA will be conducting safeguarding support visits at venues on an ongoing basis to support Registered Venues and ensure safeguarding standards are being maintained. Failure to comply with the standards can lead to the withdrawal of a venue’s registration and associated benefits.

It is the coaches’ responsibility to purchase and maintain their LTA Coach Accreditation.
